The Department of Transnational Asian Studies is pleased to offer scholarships to support students participating in Rice in Country programs in Arabic, Chinese, Japanese, and Korean languages. These scholarships are designed to make language immersion experiences more accessible and affordable for Transnational Asian Studies majors and minors.
Available Scholarships
1. Merit-Based Scholarships
Four scholarships available
Award Amount: Up to 50% of program tuition fees
Eligibility: Open to Transnational Asian Studies majors only. Merit-based funding toward tuition fees not covered by the Financial Aid Office of The Center for Languages & Intercultural Communication (CLIC)
Selection Criteria: Merit-based selection
2. Supplemental Need-Based Scholarships
Four scholarships available
Award Amount: Supplemental funding toward tuition fees not covered by the Financial Aid Office or The Center for Languages & Intercultural Communication (CLIC)
Eligibility: Open to Transnational Asian Studies majors and minors with demonstrated financial need
Selection Criteria: Financial need
3. Airfare Travel Awards
Six scholarships available
Award Amount: Up to $2,000 for a roundtrip airfare to program destination*
Eligibility: Open to Transnational Asian Studies majors and minors
Selection Criteria: Financial need
*This award covers only one piece of luggage for an economy class ticket.
4. Personal Expenses Allowance
Award Amount: Variable based on need, availability, and destination
Eligibility: Open to all TAS Rice in Country participants

Application Process
To be considered for TAS Rice in Country scholarships:
- Complete the standard Rice in Country application through CLIC
- Check the box stating: "I am an Asian Studies Major/Minor and would like to be considered for a TAS scholarship"
- For personal expenses allowance, please submit a separate confidential request to the Director of Language Instruction, Hossam Elsherbiny (he9@rice.edu)
